CLASSICAL GUITAR
The classical guitar is perhaps one of the most versatile musical instruments. From a solo instrument, to accompanying singers or being part of a band, it can be played by strumming chords or by plucking the strings to create melodies.

As a student of classical guitar you will receive a comprehensive training in a variety of playing techniques as you explore different musical genres including Spanish, Folk and Jazz. You will also get to grips with orchestral concertos and classical solos. What’s more, you will learn about the instrument’s rich and varied history as you understand more about the wealth of classical guitar literature through some of the world’s greatest composers including Villa-Lobos, Roussel and Paganini.

Master the upper positions of the guitar fingerboard as you learn major scales, triads and pentatonic scales. As you move through the advanced levels you will soon develop your speed and agility, learning techniques such as ‘machine gun strums’, muting, slapping, tapping, slap harmonics, tremolo and more.

The bass is the driving force in any song. Start with a review of reading music, using major scales, triads and 7th chords to create cool-sounding bass lines for the most important chord progressions, and soon you’ll be plucking, slapping, popping, tapping, thumping or picking your way to bass heaven!

At Grade 3 onwards, this course takes you further into using scales to build bass lines. You will learn a variety of techniques including modes tetrachords, passing notes, chow to vary rhythmic activity, slap and pop, string muting and creating walking bass lines.

Experienced players move on to more advanced concepts such as rhythm changes, tritone substitution, odd time signatures, as well as a study of Latin grooves, reggae, ska and advanced bass lines. This course also covers topics such as improvisation (soloing) and practice techniques.
